About Gaafaru Island

Gaafaru (also known as Gahaafaru or Northern Reef) is a large elliptical reef with a small inhabited island located at its eastern end. It lies 62.03 km (39 mi; 33 nautical miles) north of Velana International Airport.

Known for its striking natural beauty, the Gaafaru reef has historically posed challenges for many vessels navigating the area. Structurally, it is considered a separate atoll—similar in size and form to Goifulhafehendhu and Rasdhukuramathi Atolls. It is divided from Kagi, the northernmost island of North Malé Atoll, by a narrow but deep channel called Gaafaru Kandu. The island’s lagoon averages a depth of 16 fathoms (30 meters) and features a clear center with no coral patches or shoals.
